At the outbreak of war, the tools and techniques for skin grafting remained largely unchanged since the late 19th century. German surgeon Karl Thiersch (1822 ̶̶̶ 1895) invented the partial-thickness graft in 1886 and his name became affiliated with these razor-like knives.
