Thiersch's broad skin grafting knife, nickel plated, in a damaged wooden case, by Down Bros, London, early 20th century. At the outbreak of war, the tools and techniques for skin grafting remained largely unchanged since the late 19th century. German surgeon Karl Thiersch (1822 ̶̶̶ 1895) invented the partial-thickness graft in 1886 and his name became affiliated with these razor-like knives.
