Dr. Yusuf Hamied (m.1954) graduated with a PhD under Lord Todd in which he studied the chemistry of black flies. After graduating he joined his father's firm CIPLA, of which he became managing Director in 1972 and Chairman in 1982. He was able to expand CIPLA into an international business. His company made anti AIDS drugs which it was able to sell for a fraction of the international price in third world countries. This provoked much controversy but saved many lives. Ultimately his actions forced the price down for such medicines. In 2005 he was awarded the Padma Bushan from the Indian Government. 2006 the College made him a Lady Margaret Beaufort Fellow (one of the first such appointments) and in 2008 he was made an Honorary Fellow.
