"In expectation of the resurrection here lies Ralph Widdrington fellow of the College, public orator and Lady Margaret Professor"
Ralph Widdrington was admitted pensioner in 1632; MA 1639; D.D. 1661. He was a fellow from 1639-88. In 1650 he took the Engagement and was appointed Public Orator. He was Professor of Greek from1654 to 1660 being supported by Cromwell. In 1672 he was appointed as Lady Margaret Professor in the reign of Charles II, a title he held till his death in 1688. He was an active pushing man, not afraid of inconsistency. It is difficult to imagine that he was a fit man for either of the professorships he held, one under Cromwell and the other under Charles II; he wrote nothing and probably lectured little; but he may not have had less than average qualifications.
