Here lyeth ye body of Dr. Ralph Cudworth late Master of Christ's College about 34 years, Hebrew Professor and Prebendary of Gloucester. He died ye 26th June 1688 in ye 71st year of his age.
Ralph Cudworth was born in 1617; graduated from Emmanuel BA 1635 Fellow Emmanuel 1639; Master of Clare (when only 28) by authority of Parliament 1645 (which he accepted in 1650?) Master of Christ's 1654-88. He was Professor of Hebrew. In 1657 he was involved with the Committee of the House of Commons on the revision of the authorised version of the Bible. He was on good terms with all the Fellowship except Widdrington whose quarrels were internecine. He stoutly defended the College against Royal Mandates for election.
