Bishop Beilly Porteus was a 10th wrangler, 2nd Chancellors medallist in 1752; MA 1755. His parents emigrated from America in 1720. Elected Finch and Baines Fellow in 1752. In 1773 endeavoured to promote revision of the liturgy but Archbishop Cornwallis would have none of it. Bishop of Chester 1777-1787; London 1787-1808. A supporter of Sunday Schools; patron of Church Missionary Society; against immorality and profaneness - even in Prince of Wales; a supporter of Wilberforce in stopping the slave trade. Keen on proper performance of Church services hence his gift to the College of £1200 in 1807 to provide three prizes: one for best reader in Chapel; one for a Latin essay and one for an English essay to be read in Chapel.[PBR II pp252]
