Thomas Baines was born in Whaddon, Cambs. He was admitted pensioner in 1638; MA 1649; MD from Padua incorporated at Cambridge 1661. Epitaph in College Chapel states that he and Sir John Finch were pupils of Henry More. He was a fairly constant companion of Sir John Finch. He served as physician in Florence and Constantinople where Finch was Ambassador. In 1675 they set out with Dr Covel, the chaplain of the embassy, for Adrianople, where they narrowly escaped the plague. Sir Thomas died in Constantinople 5th Sept 1680 aged 59. Sir John Finch had his body embalmed and brought back to the UK. When Sir John died in 1682, he and his friend were buried in the stately monument in the NE corner of the Chapel. He is commemorated in the "Finch and Baines" Fellowships and Scholarships. {PBR I pp455]
