Description
John Kaye seated with Lincoln Cathedral in the background. He was born 1783; admitted pensioner in 1800, Senior Wrangler 1804. He became Master in 1814 aged 30. He was V.C. in 1815 when he married a banker's daughter. Regius Professor of Divinity 1816-27 and was unusual in that he gave lectures and published them. He helped revive "patristic" learning in Cambridge on which he wrote a book shown in the portrait. He became Bishop of Bristol and then in 1827 Bishop of Lincoln, while still Master of the College, though he did resign his Professorship. He died in 1853 aged 70.
