John Robert Seeley was born in London in 1834. Admitted pensioner in 1852. BA (Senior Chancellor's medallist) 1857; MA 1860; Litt.D. (Honoris Causa) 1892. Elected Fellow in 1858. Professor of Latin at University College 1863. He married Agnes Phillott 1869 and hence vacated his fellowship. A few weeks later he was appointed Regius Professor of History. Elected Professorial Fellow of Caius and Honorary Fellow of Christ's 1883. K.C.M.G. 1894. Suffered from insomnia, often reading from 7pm to 3am. Died 1895 aged 60. He believed that history was a school for statesmanship, that supernatural events were not necessary to religion and that the Empire was more important than parliamentary wrangling in the 1800s.
