Description
The Lamentations: an 18th century copy of 16th century painting. On back: Carolus Kersall 1856; Anthony Van Dyke.
The original of this painting is in the Picture Gallery Antwerp. This is a poor copy with discoloured varnish and shrunken bitumen. It was considered by Goodison in 1958 to be not worth restoring. However it has been cleaned in 2000 by Julie Crick, who removed the surface grime using distilled water.
