The arms of William Byngham: "Or on a fess gules three bougets argent BYNGHAM, Beneath the arms a scroll "William Byngham".
William Byngham c1390-1451, was Rector of St John Zachary, London. Alarmed at the shortage of grammar teachers he founded the new college of God's House. With the help of the Lord Mayor of London, John Brockley, he purchased some land on Milne St in Cambridge in 1437. Faced with King Henry VI's determination to build King's College on the same site Bingham purchased some more land in St Andrew's St in 1446 and moved the foundation there. The charter was not granted until 1448 whereupon Bingham became head of the new college which was to be of 60 scholars. God's House was later refounded by Lady Margaret Beaufort as Christ's College.[The Heraldry of Christ's College by David Broonfield 2015]
