Thomas De Grey (1718-1781) was born at Merton Norfolk. He was admitted fellow-commoner in 1735 aged 17. He resided in the College from 1735-1737. Known as "Long Tom", he managed the Fisher Estates in Bury after 1738 and in 1746 married the heiress of the estate, who died aged 20. He was MP for Norfolk 1764 and 1768. The chair in which he was carried after the election on 1764 (which cost him £10,000) is preserved at Merton, Norfolk. He was the Lieut.-Col of the Western Battalion of the Norfolk Militia 1764. He died without issue in 1781 and is buried in Merton.
