The work was inspired by visiting Down House in Kent and was a response to spending time in Darwin's study. This was found to be a place of methodical experiments, careful note-taking, repetition and obsessive compulsion, combined with a comfortable but ordered homeliness.
Originally acquired from Broughton House Gallery, Cambridge, in 2009 by Alan and Madeleine Tongue, who donated it to the college in 2023.
