James Cartmell as a young man. (MA Christ's 1836) Elected fellow in 1833. He was the 24th Master after the resignation of Joseph Shaw 13th Feb 1849 until 23 Jan 1881, covering the whole period of the transitional statutes of 1860. The new Statutes came in in 1882. He was a good financier and business man; He suggested teaching staff should be free from the condition of celibacy; established small temporary Fellowships free of teaching duties; He opposed the amalgamation of Christ's and Emmanuel. He is buried in the Ante-Chapel.[PBR pp436]
