Charles Oliver Murray 'Charles O. Murray'. Murray was a Scottish etcher of landscapes, architectural subjects, portraits and historical views. He studied at the Edinburgh School of Design and at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools. During the later nineteenth century he produced many fine etchings and engravings after the designs of such contemporary artists as Alma-Tadema, Charles Whymper and W. G. Stevenson. By 1900, however, he turned to etching his own designs and created some sought after views of both Oxford and Cambridge colleges.
Charles O. Murray was elected to the Royal Engravers in 1881. In total he exhibited over one hundred and fifty etchings with the Royal Engravers. As well, his art was regularly shown at both the Royal Academy and at the Royal Scottish Academy. See also cc00297. This print is part of a set of 6 that have special frames with the college crest affixed to the top. Another copy, with a plainer wooden frame, is stored on shelf 6 of room 4.13 (from 7th July 2025).
