James Austen-Cartmell was the son of James Cartmell (Master 1849-81) [see cc00057]. He was born in the Lodge in 1862. Admitted pensioner 1880; BA 1884; MA 1889 called to the Bar (Lincoln's Inn) 1889 and practiced at the Chancery Lane Bar. Junior Equity Counsel to the Board of Inland Revenue; to the Board of Trade; to Commissioners of Woods and Forests; to the Charity Commissioners and to the Board of Education (Charity Jurisdiction) since 1908. He married Mary Affleck in 1886 but she died in 1906. After his death in 1921 his sister gave the portrait to the college in 1922. [PBR II pp675]. See also Col Mag 1923 May.
