Charles Robert Cecil Augustine Allberry (9 November 1911 – 3 April 1943) adm. schol. 1930, to study for the classical tripos. He went on to become an English Egyptologist and Coptic scholar. A friend of novelist CP Snow, Allberry was the model for Roy Calvert in Snow's novel, 'The Light and the Dark'. He was elected the 1st Lady Wallis Budge Fellow.
Allberry attended St Dunstan's College, Catford, and Christ's College, Cambridge, and become a fellow of Christ's in 1935.
Allberry translated Manichaean manuscripts, and is particularly known for translating and editing the first edition of A Manichean Psalm-Book, Part II, in 1938. He also compiled a Coptic dictionary, unfinished at his death. He served as editor of the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology (from 1939). Edited edition of Chester Beatty m/s on Manichaean psalter, 1938.
During World War II, at first employed in work utilising his fluency in German; then insisted on combative service, he joined the Royal Air Force as a Flying Officer and died in action in Nedeweert, Holland, 3 April 1943.

Object History Note
Photograph by Ramsey and Muspratt signed and presented by himself. Additional copy (the one now hanging on display) provided by his nephew W.A.J.Allberry 1967-1970. see also picture cc604. Was in picture store rack 18 moved to staircase 4 in 2019, where it is on display in the corridoor. A later accession (Acc. 2023_65) is signed 'To the Master gratefully and affectionately Charles Allberry'. This is in 4.13 (cabinet 4 drawer 5).
