James Monatgu Fellow Commoner 1585; D.D by special Grace 1598, fifth son of Sir Edward Boughton. probably concerned with the foundation of Sydney Sussex College; first stone laid in 1595. He was the first Master 1596-1608. Bishop of Bath and Wells 1608; Bishop of Winchester 1616. He edited the works of King James I. (copy held in library). Died 1618 at Greenwich aged 50. Buried in Bath Abbey. He gave plate to the College. {PBR I pp181]
