Thomas Burnet was born at Croft near Darlington around 1635; Came to Christ's 1656 under Cudworth and made Fellow in 1657. He travelled a lot with the Earl of Ormond, who helped appoint him to the Mastership of Charterhouse. He was an independent thinker. He had a theory that the outer crust of the world was crushed during the deluge. He resisted James II who tried to appoint a catholic pensioner to Charterhouse. He was made Clerk to the Closet under William III, but had to resign due to his supposed heterodoxy. He died aged 80 and is buried in the Chapel at Charterhouse.
