Henry Gunning

John Thomas Woodhouse (artist)‎, G.D.Beechey (artist)‎

Gunning admitted sizar 1784; BA 1788; MA 1791; Esquire Bedell 1789 - 1853. He wrote a book on his account of education given in the college and its general condition. Elected Esquire Bedell 1789, a Whig of advanced views; had several sons only one survived. He kept memoranda of the University and College matters in his early years. He destroyed these whilst suffering from a dangerous illness in fear lest they were too personal. He dictated the contents of this work from memory when over 80; certainly they are personal but most of the persons referred to were long dead. They throw valuable light on the university during this period. [PBR vol ii pp318]. The gold medal he wears was presented to him for his activities in support of the Reform Bill of 1832. The picture may have been to commemorate that event. John Thomas Woodhouse (1780-1845) was a portrait painter known for one portrait at the NPG. He was an amateur painter and local doctor. Milner of NPG thought it was probably by G.D.Beechey, son of Sir Wm Beechey. [Col Mag 1911]

Mr. Cook advised the college that the picture needed a new frame [see portrait file filing cabinet 4]. Framing performed with diffuse reflection glass by Messrs. Arnold Wiggins, Baker St London in 1964 [see red portrait file filing cabinet 4]. This picture was in the collection of C.H.Cooper, Cambridge, in 1854; then in the possession of his widow in 1890, then with the College by 1897. Cleaned and revarnished in 1949 by Thos Agnew & Sons.
