Description
James Cartmell was born 1810. BA 1833 (Emma); MA 1836 (Christ's) BD 1846; D.D 1849. Elected fellow 1833; Steward 1834,1841. Elected Master on resignation of Joseph Shaw 13.2.1849. His mastership, for 32 years, covered the period of the transition of the statutes from the original Statutes of the Foundress to the Statutes of 1882. This was a significant feat of leadership. This made the college more prosperous than before; offered financial help to the University on the building of New Museums (but conditions not met); rebuilt Hall 23.1.1881. Died 23rd January 1881 and is buried in ante-chapel.
