Head and shoulders of William Perkins (1558-1602; m.1577 Fellow 1584). (PBR page 141 vol. 1). In his early course he was a bad character who became an eminent theological scholar "but little inferior to Hooker and Calvin". He was an unflinching Calvinist and popular lecturer. When he left the Fellowship to get married it was considered a great loss to the College. His fame rests on his writings and preaching.
