Autographed photo. Harry Marshall Ward was born in Nottingham in 1854. Pensioner 1877; BA 1879; MA 1883; D.Sc.1892. Fellow 1883. After graduation he continued to study Botany on the continent at Wurzburg and Strasburg. From there he went to Ceylon as Cryptogamic Botanist to the Government where he investigated with success the coffee leaf disease then devastating the plantations of the colony. In 1882 he was appointed Professor of Botany at Owens College, Manchester; 1885 he became Professor of Botany at the Royal Indian Engineering College at Cooper's Hill. He returned to Cambridge in 1895 as Professor of Botany. Elected Honorary Fellow of Christ's 1897; Fellow of the Linnaean Society, FRS; President of the British Mycological Society 1900-2. He wrote several books. He died in Torquay in 1906.
