Hugh Allen was born in Reading, Berkshire, England in 1869. His musical talent was apparent from an early age, and at 11 he was organist of a local parish church. He won an organ scholarship to Christ's College, Cambridge, graduating BA from Cambridge in 1895. He rose to become Director of the Royal College of Music. He was knighted in 1920 and died 1946.
