Anthony Watson matriculated 1567; son of Edward Watson ofThorp Thewles, Durham. BA 1571/2; MA 1575; BD 1582; DD 1596. Elected Fellow before Mids. 1573. held till Mich 1583; He was Dean 1575-80; a college preacher 1581-3. 1590 Deanery of Bristol held till 1597. From 15th July 1592-1596 Chancellor of Wells and rector of Storrington Sussex the patron being Lord Lumley who had previously given him Cheam. 1595 he was the Queen's Almoner. 1st June 1596 nominated Bishop of Chichester. He attended the death bed of Queen Elizabeth and took part in the Hampton Court Conference before James I. He died unmarried at Cheam 10th Sept 1605 and was buried there. By his will he left £10 to ten sub-sizars of Christ's and £100 to augment the Library which was well expended, especially on good editions of the Fathers which still remain; Luther's works in 5 volumes and Melancthon's in 4 volumes were also bought. His arms are on the wall in the library amongst those of its principal benefactors.[PBR I pp101]
The arms are: "per pale dexter(azure) seated on a throne Jesus Christ dexter hand raised in judgement sinister hand resting on an open book and out of his mouth a two edged sword point to the sinister all (or) SEE of CHICHESTER impaling Sinister (ermine) on a chief (gules) a sun in splendour (or) WATSON (granted 1596). Above the Bishop's mitre. "Watson Anthony Matriculated 1567"
