Ralph Cudworth born 1617; BA 1635/6; MA 1639 D,D, 1651 Fellow Emmanuel 1639; Master Clare by authority of parliament 1645, but accepted only in 1650. Master of Christ's 1654-88. He married a rich London widow and had a daughter and three sons with her. The sons and some cousins all came to Christ's. He was a notable Platonist and controversialist in the time of More and Locke, but free from Henry More's mysticism. He died in College in 1688 still in harness (probably of prostate cancer?). He wrote much but published little and later in life was very irritable. He survived the change from the Commonwealth to the Restoration keeping much of the College privileges intact - as well as himself. (PBR)
