Here lies the most venerable and learned Thomas Standish, Senior Fellow of Christ's College. Died 5th May, aged 83, 1714
Thomas Standish was born in Newark 1633; admitted pensioner 1648 aged 15; BA 165; MA 1655; Fellow 1653. One of the longest tenures on record, 61 years [PBR I pp522]. He was appointed to a fellowship before Cromwell was made Protector and died four months before Queen Anne in 1714, aged 83. There was some anxiety about his Fellowship after the Restoration which Cudworth resolved, probably part of the spat with Widdrington. This memorial survived when many memorials were removed to make room for others, probably through its comparative insignificance.
