Thomas Lynford

Thomas Lynford was admitted (as Linford) as a sizar in 1666 aged 16; BA 1670/1, MA 1674, DD 1689; Curate Fen Drayton 1674. Elected Fellow 1675. Rector of St Edmund the King, Lombard St 1685-1724. Vacated his Fellowship 1686. Prebendary of Westminster 1700; Sub-Dean 1723. Chaplain to William III; Archdeacon of Barnstable. He bore the cost of casing with stone the front of the Great Gateway and between the Gateway and Hobson St. It dates the introduction of sash windows into the College. He died in 1724 aged 74. [PBR II p7] Thomas Murray (1663-1735) was a Scottish-born portrait painter who moved to London and studied with a member of the De Critz family before becoming a pupil of eminent portraitist John Riley. In 1703, he painted Queen Anne for the Society of the Middle Temple in London Milner (NPG) agreed that Murray was the artist 1911

1660 - 1720

A letter from Anna Maria Jenon, evidently addressed to the Master of the College, and dated 1745/6, runs as follows: "Mr Lardner, who, some years past had the pleasure of being known to you, desired in his Will, that after his death, a picture of Dr Lynford's (which you may have seen at Mr Lardners) should be sent to the Master of Christ's College to be hanged in the Lodge - I have chose to send it to you while I live, and hope it will not be unacceptable to you, and that you will favour it with a place in your lodge." a postscript adds that the portrait is on the way. Lardner was formerly an apothecary in Petty Cury. The picture was repaired in 1979
