Half-length portrait standing; John Young Buchanan FRS was born in 1844; admitted to college 1889; MA 1891; chemist and physicist on the "Challenger" expedition (to the Southern Seas) during which the first photographic images of icebergs ever to be captured were taken. These albums are in the Fellows Papers collection (FP 239). Buchanan was University Lecturer 1889-92. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in connection with Oceanographical Research. Commander of the Order of St Charles of Monaco. He left a considerable quantity of silver for the use of the Master's Lodge. The artist was Jean Louis Tinayre.

Interest in a copy for the Geography Department celebrations of the centenary of the Challenger Expedition. Buchanan was considered one of the first lecturers in Geography in the University.
