Joah Bates was born in Halifax and educated at Eton. Admitted Christ's pensioner 1759 aged 19. Admitted Kings 1760; BA 1764; MA 1767; Fellow and Tutor of Kings. Private secretary to the Earl of Sandwich, who made him Commissioner of the Victualling Office - conductor of "the concerts of ancient music". Commissioner of the Customs. Vice President of Westminster Hospital and Director of Greenwich Hospital. He married Sarah Harrop 1780. Impoverished in later years by bad speculation. He died in 1799.
