First of four wood blocks which combine to make Adrian Wiszniewski's print 'Chez Nous'. See the descriptions of the prints for further information.
The blocks for this woodcut were cut in Liverpool in 1987, while the artist was in residence at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. No preparation sketches were made, and he drew directly on to the boards, which were supplied by Glasgow Print Studio. It was made as a major piece for the ‘New Editions’ show at Nigel Greenwood in March 1987 and is the first woodcut the artist had made – an ambitious first piece. He explained “I had no real knowledge of how to do a woodcut, but to prevent boredom I knew that I had to play with textures across the whole surface and revel in their interface with the content.”
