Illustration of a figure of a tattooed man surrounded by oak leaves. The oak leaves are a motif that occur in many of Byrne's paintings and prints. Printed in red ink, also known as 'The Red Tattoo'. The mezzotint plate for this print was begun in1995 (the composition of the image recalls Byrne's lithographs of 1994) but the plate was not editioned until 2005. This is one of three mezzotints, similar in scale and in content, which appear to have been influenced by the artist's observations of Californian beach culture.
