This piece is a carborundum print. It is a type of etching where carborundum powder is used to make a paste that is applied to the etching plate, allowing a textured surface to be created. This allows for painterly effects to be created in a print. This work is one of a series, begun in a graphics studio in Dublin. Barbara's work is often informed by the landscapes she encounters on her travels, many of which inspire the palette she uses in her etchings.
Barbara Rae had a solo exhibition of her monotypes at the Print Studio in 1987 and four futher solo shows between 1992 and 2003. This print was made as part of the 40/40 exhibition in 2013, to mark 40 years of Glasgow Print Studio. 40 artists were each invited to make an edition of 40 prints, which was exhibited at Glasgow Print Studio from 24th August to 13th October 2013.
