This print was first displayed at the Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy in London in 2017. It is a carborundum print made from 3 plates. The Royal Academy website has the following description:
"Vibrant hues of blue and yellow dominate this print by Barbara Rae RA, which takes as its starting point the windswept western coastline of County Mayo, Republic of Ireland. Renowned for her large-scale paintings infused with passion and energy, Rae’s extensive travels in the UK, Europe and beyond have consistently informed her printmaking which is an integral part of her wider practice. Recent work has been inspired by new adventures to the Arctic where Rae has continued to draw from the dramatic landscape around her.
‘The inspiration for these prints is my favourite location on County Mayo, close to the dramatic Ceide cliffs which jut out into the Atlantic beside the prehistoric farm site, Ceide Fields. The cliffs have stripes of sedimentary rock, giving them a bold presence. They are home to many nesting seabirds, constantly on the move, animating the land and seascape.I have been working at Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, Co Mayo for 15 years. Each year I return and continue to uncover layers of history. My interest in land use, and the relationship between the land, the sea and the farmers and fishermen who make their home there, is continually renewed.’
