An image of a white ceramic jug with blue painted flowers against a black backdrop. Created as part of the Glasgow Print Studio's 50th Anniversary Exhibition's 'Here & Now Legacy Print Project'.
"My work over the years has always been based on still life, and in particular, jugs. I was invited to create a print for the Glasgow Print Studio’s 40th anniversary exhibition ‘40/40’ back in 2013 for which I produced an etching and aquatint of a jug called ‘Summer Jug’. Delighted to be invited to create a print for the 50th anniversary exhibition, I decided to revisit the theme and produced ‘Summer Jug II’. This etching and aquatint are basically the same jug, however, I have inverted the design on the surface of the jug. I also decided to set the jug against a black background and cast a strong shadow over the surface of the jug to suggest that the jug is sitting on a window ledge below a blind on a sunny summer day. The choice of colour is influenced by the blue and white china still life objects in paintings by Henri Matisse which I have admired for so long. The print has been created using three separate steel plates. The first is a texture plate to represent the aged surface of the jug, this is printed in grey. The second plate is the decoration on the surface of the jug, it is printed in aquamarine blue, and the final plate is the background and shadow which is printed in black." - David Palmer
