Line drawing of a man sitting in a chair, wearing a large hat and smoking a pipe, printed in blue ink. A date of 22/11/86 appears in reverse at the top left corner of the images - this has been written in the plate and therefore prints back to front.
In an interview with Glasgow Print Studio on 21st June 2010, the artist stated;
“[From] 1986 again. Same thing, just did a free line drawing. There was a simple line and I didn’t see any reason for changing it, and I quite liked the colour, a nice pale blue, quite cool. A man with a pipe and an extremely large bow tie. I don’t know why I did these things, the guys with the big hats. I think I saw Quentin Crisp and I just quite liked the idea of a big hat.”
Is the man a dandy, foppish character? “It’s like that but there’s also something quite rural about it, and Amish. I went to see the Amish people in America and brought back one of their hats. I like the idea of that, being so ostentatious, and yet at the same time it’s such an unostentatious culture.”
