De houding van deze burgemeester van Den Haag onthult een zekere zelfingenomenheid, maar de lichte glimlach en de blosjes op zijn wangen geven de geportretteerde iets ondeugends. Jan Hudde Dedel is hier zittend afgebeeld in een rode jas en een vest met witte jabot. In de rechterhand heeft de burgervader een blad papier met daarop afgedrukt een gedicht van hemzelf. Volgens de dichtregels werd deze beminnaar van de deugd en de edele poëzie in dit schilderij ‘door Schouman als Apel in schilderkunst ervaren.’ De kunstenaar Aert Schouman heeft met dit werk een uiterst vriendelijk portret van zijn gewaardeerde vriend gemaakt. Beiden waren lid van het kunstenaarsgenootschap Confrerie Pictura. Ook gingen zij vaak samen naar de bijeenkomsten van ‘Kunstliefde Spaart geen Vlijt’. Aan dit kunstlievend dichtgenootschap schonk Dedel, direct na voltooiing van het werk in 1775, dit portret als teken van achting aan ‘elk treflyk Kunstgenoot.’
Zijn stedelijke loopbaan begon Dedel als beheerder van de Duitse en Italiaanse posterijen in Den Haag. In 1729 werd hij benoemd tot schepen; een positie die hij maar liefst elf keer bekleedde. Vanaf 1737 wisselde hij dit ambt af met dat van burgemeester. Tot op zeer hoge leeftijd was Dedel op verschillende terreinen in de stad zeer actief. Vier dagen voor zijn dood was de 74-jarige kunstliefhebber net aan zijn elfde termijn als burgervader begonnen en vervulde hij nog altijd de rol van curator van de Latijnse school, kerkmeester van de Grote Kerk, ambachtsheer van Rijkswijk, opperdeken van het chirurgijnsgilde en ook beschermheer van de kunstgenootschappen Pictura en ‘Kunstliefde Spaart geen Vlijt’. Na het overlijden van Dedel op 26 november 1777 ontstond bij Schouman de behoefte om ter nagedachtenis aan zijn vriend een gegraveerde beeltenis te vervaardigen. De schilder baseerde zich hiervoor op dit ene portret dat hij eerder van hem had gemaakt. Ons schilderij illustreert zo heel goed het experimentele karakter van Schoumans prentkunst. Op basis van één portret kon de kunstenaar vele verschillende varianten maken.
