Gekleed in een kostuum van gespikkeld damast met een molensteenkraag is landsadvocaat Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547-1619) hier op latere leeftijd afgebeeld. Er zijn meerdere vergelijkbare portretten van Oldenbarnevelt bekend die alle door of naar Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt zijn geschilderd. Het portret van de landsadvocaat moet voor deze beroemde portretschilder uit de Noordelijke Nederlanden een commercieel succes zijn geweest. Na prins Maurits en Frederik Hendrik was Oldenbarnevelt voor Van Mierevelt de meest gevraagde persoon om op doek verbeeld te worden. De populariteit van het portret kwam zeer waarschijnlijk door de politieke rol die Oldenbarnevelt vervulde als belangrijkste politicus van de Republiek.
Opmerkelijk is wel dat alle bestaande portretten van Oldenbarnevelt zijn vervaardigd in relatief korte tijd en pas aan het eind van zijn leven, namelijk in de periode van 1614/1615 tot 1618. Op dat moment was in de Republiek een burgeroorlog uitgebroken tussen de contraremonstranten en de remonstranten. Oldenbarnevelt stond aan het hoofd van de laatste groep, waardoor de kopers van zijn portret vooral gezocht moeten worden onder zijn aanhangers.
Op 14 september 1547 werd Johan van Oldenbarnevelt geboren in Amersfoort waar hij zijn jeugd doorbracht in het nog bestaande Huis Bollenburgh, een hoog oprijzend gebouw aan de Muurhuizen (tegenwoordig nummer 19). Na het voltooien van zijn rechtenstudie in het buitenland werd hij in 1570 advocaat voor het Hof van Holland (hoogste gerechtshof van Holland) in Den Haag. Een zeer succesvolle en invloedrijke carrière als stadspensionaris van Rotterdam en later als landsadvocaat van Holland volgde. Oldenbarnevelt slaagde erin om zijn laatste ambt van juridisch adviseur in korte tijd uit te bouwen tot de belangrijkste woordvoerder van het machtigste gewest. Dertig jaar lang stond hij aan het hoofd van een staat in wording: de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden. Oldenbarnevelt werkte in deze tijd nauw samen met prins Maurits, maar vanaf het begin van de zeventiende eeuw ontstonden er grote politieke verschillen tussen beide heren. De conflicten liepen zo hoog op dat de landsadvocaat uiteindelijk wegens hoogverraad ter dood werd veroordeeld. Op 13 mei 1619 stierf Oldenbarnevelt op het schavot op het Binnenhof.
