Het bulderende geluid van kanonnen en geweerschoten verdrijft de stilte van het kale en heuvelachtige landschap. Het Staatse leger heeft zich verzameld in de duinen en op het strand iets ten zuiden van de Belgische kustplaats Oostende, terwijl de vloot de strijd tegen de Duinkerker kapers op zee ondersteunt. Deze Slag bij Nieuwpoort op 2 juli 1600 geldt nog steeds als bekendste wapenfeit van prins Maurits.
De stadhouder is hier bijna levensgroot weergegeven op een wit briesend paard met uitzonderlijk lange manen en staart. Linksboven zweeft een engeltje met een palmtak en een lauwerkrans om de roem en de overwinning van de prins in deze veldtocht te onderstrepen. Tezamen met twee andere gelijksoortige ruiterportretten van stadhouder Frederik Hendrik (1643) en Willem II (1647) maakt dit werk onderdeel uit van een reeks. Opvallend aan de drie ruiterportretten zijn de lage horizon en het te grote hoofd van de geportretteerde. De schilderijen waren bedoeld hoog aan de muur te hangen en dus van onderaf te bekijken.
Schilder Jacob Frans van der Merck maakte dit ruiterportret van prins Maurits ruim vijftien jaar na diens dood. Het hoofd van de geportretteerde is daarom niet naar het leven geschilderd maar rechtstreeks ontleend aan een staatsieportret dat hofschilder Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt rond 1607 van hem maakte. Maurits is daar afgebeeld in fraai verguld harnas dat de Staten-Generaal hem na de Slag bij Nieuwpoort cadeau deed. Voor de pose van de stadhouder heeft Van der Merck zich laten inspireren door een gravure van Crispijn van den Queborn uit 1630. Ook voor de houding van het paard heeft de schilder gebruik gemaakt van een andere prent waar Frederik Hendrik met zijn gevolg te paard is weergegeven. De witte Spaanse hengst op dit postume ruiterportret van prins Maurits is overigens niet willekeurig gekozen. Gedurende de Slag van Nieuwpoort heeft Maurits’ neef dit paard buitgemaakt op aartshertog Albertus. Nu wordt het dier bereden door de held van deze veldocht: prins Maurits.
