Bell from the whale catcher 'Albatros'. Found by Mr W Alan Etchells (BAS), wrapped and covered, under a bench in the Engineers’ Workshop in Grytviken. It was taken by Etchells back to England where he later gave it to Gordon T Bowra. (Bowra had been at Halley Base 1962/63.) Until it was donated to the museum it had been hung in the Georgia house of Dr Gordon T Bowra. Following his death the family all gathered at the house and as each person arrived they rang the bell. They have now decided to return it to the museum.
The bell has the name of the ship cast into the surface, as well as the year that the ship was constructed. Bell still has original clapper with attached rope.
