John Wesley Hales was born in 1836, the son of a Wesleyan Minister, in Ashby de la Zouche, admitted pensioner 1855; BA 1859; MA 1862 admitted to Lincoln's Inn 1859; Barrister 1867; admitted Fellow 1860. Master at Marlborough College 1860-63; HM Inspector of Schools 1866-7. Marrried 1867 settled in London on Primrose Hill (then devoid of houses in 1871). Became Professor of English at King's College London. Examiner in English at University of London 1881-1903 with two breaks. Hon Fellow of Christ's 1901. President of the Hampstead Antiquarian Soc. Died 19th May 1914.
